There have been hundreds of studies over the years supporting the effectiveness of chiropractic for a range of muscular-skeletal and health concerns. The evidence is becoming greater and greater, however further funding is still required to help chiropractic become even more mainstream and overcome much of the criticism it receives from other professions for not having enough scientific evidence.
Below is a selection of some of the peer-reviewed research available:
Cervico-genic (Tension) Headaches and Migraines
Headaches are a common presentation at a chiropractic practice. There are more than 230 peer-reviewed articles published on the successful treatment of headaches and migraines by chiropractic management across the world. Chiropractic adjustments have been found decrease the frequency and severity and in many cases cure headaches and migraines.
A study trial reported that 22% of subjects experienced a reduction of headache and migraine attacks by 90%. Also the study found a 49% reduction in pain and severity.
Chiropractic care is one of the only hands on natural therapies which can give such significant relief for headache and migraines
There is research at the moment being conducted using MRI technology which shows how upper neck adjustments affect different brain conditions. Early results have shown a significant increase in blood flow and cerebral spinal fluid but also excitingly it has shown reduction of brain plaque (seen in multiple sclerosis) and reversal of cerebellar invagination (cerebellum position is below base of skull line).
These findings are very exciting especially for those patients with brain conditions such as multiple sclerosis.
American celebrity Montel Williams has gone on record saying the life changing results he has had a s multiple sclerosis patient under chiropractic care.
Hypertension (High Blood Pressure)
A 2007 study conducted by leading hypertension expert George Bakris was published in the Human Journal of Hypertension.
The study proved that one single upper neck adjustment had the same result on patients as taking 2 hypertension drugs.
The best part of the study was that it found the effects of the upper neck adjustment lasted over 6 months!
There have been also studies on low blood pressure or hypotension.
These studies reported that patients experienced a raise in their blood pressure to healthy levels after chiropractic adjustments.
This proves that when the body is in healthy nervous system function the body can heal itself.
Chiropractic is the largest natural healthcare profession in the world and prides itself on drug-free, non-invasive care.
The Journal of the American Medical Association published its guidelines on low back pain and has stated for those who suffer from back pain to consult a chiropractor as the first port of call and surgery to be the last resort.Adhesive Capsulitis (Frozen Shoulder)
The most recent study of chiropractic management for frozen shoulder trialled on 50 participants reported the following results:
• 16 with complete resolution
• 25 participants had 75-90% improvement
• 8 participants had 50-75% improvement
• 1 participant had 0-50% improvement
Abnormal Spinal Curvature (Scoliosis)
Chiropractic has been shown to help manage the symptoms associated with scoliosis. Research has shown that long term corrective chiropractic management can decrease the prevalence of scoliosis and also slow down any further progression in scoliotic patients.
Dr Dennis Woggon is the founder the Clear Institute, a not for profit organisation set up to educate and establish an inter-referral system between health care practitioners on the benefits of early chiropractic intervention with patients with scoliosis.
The Clear Institute developed a system which treated scoliosis effectively, without surgery or orthopaedic braces. The research has shown patients undergoing this corrective system demonstrated between 10-30% reductions in scoliotic curves in the spine.
