What is Gonstead?
The Gonstead Chiropractic technique was developed by Dr Clarence S. Gonstead in Mt. Horeb, Wisconsin. Dr Gonstead first experienced the wonders of chiropractic when he was a young man. In his early twenties he suffered from rheumatoid arthritis and at his worst he became bed ridden. His family tried every conventional medical solution with no success, until his Aunt arranged for Dr Olsen, the local Chiropractor to come and assess him at the family home. Dr Olsen assessed and adjusted Gonstead two to three times a day for three days. Gonstead was able to get out of bed and crawl around by day two. The eventual improvement of his condition with consistent chiropractic care made him pursue a career as a Doctor of Chiropractic.
Before becoming a Chiropractor Dr Gonstead studied engineering, this interest saw him view the spine as a mechanical engineering wonder. He spent many hours studying the mechanics of the spine, trying to understand the way it moved and analysing it’s engineering. It was after many years of research and applied clinical experience Dr Gonstead developed the Gonstead Chiropractic Technique. He was a pioneer of chiropractic and contributed immensely to the profession.
Developed the use of AP full spine X-ray and the full spine Lateral X-ray procedures
Developed the cervical chair and seated adjustments
First to develop an exclusive chiropractic X-ray unit
One of the first to explain sacroiliac joint range of motion
Developed a pelvic analysis system

The Gonstead System
The Gonstead system of chiropractic is based on the foundation principle. Dr Gonstead after many years of research developed a system which analysed the pelvis. With his background in engineering he viewed the pelvis as the foundation of the spine, thus by analysing the pelvis and correcting any misalignments at the foundation, he believed would have a flow on affect further up the spine.
Gonstead also developed a surface EMG instrument called the Nervoscope. He used this instrument in his analysis, to be very specific and precise in locating the client’s problem area. This instrument is still used in practice today.
(Specific Gonstead X-rays may be used to help identify problematic areas)

The Gonstead formula consists of:
Finding the subluxation, by seeing it on the client, feeling it on the client, finding which exact joints are involved, using the nervoscope instrument, X-ray analyisis and reviewing the health history and presentation.
Accept it where you find it.
Correct it, deliver the adjustment by hand.
Leave it alone
This formula was very successful for Gonstead and he built a reputation on results. The Gonstead Chiropractic Clinic in Mt Horeb, Wisconsin was once the biggest Chiropractic clinic in the world. Gonstead built a runway for clients to fly in and see him, he also built a motel to accommodate the many clients who would travel from all over America and the world to see him. The average length of travel for clients was 160 kilometres a study had shown. He was famous for saying he never spent a dollar to advertise, his results did the talking.
The Gonstead Adjustment
The key to the this adjustment is specificity. The Gonstead adjustment is a short vector force to the neutral position of the affected joint. It is a specific, short lever, high velocity low amplitude set and hold impulse delivered by hand. There is a specific line of correction involved with every adjustment, this specificity and attention to detail has been very successful in patient management and positive client results. The system has a very famous reputation based on results and is seen as the gold standard in hands on adjusting techniques in the chiropractic profession.
