Chiropractic care has become more and more popular for women during pregnancy each year. Low back pain is the most common complaint of women who see a chiropractor while pregnant. It is reported that 50-80% of woman complain of back pain and a third of them state it the low back pain if a significant problem. The International Chiropractic Paediatric Association is taking part in
multiple studies to show the safety and effectiveness of chiropractic care during pregnancy. Chiropractors are also participating in ongoing educational classes to learn chiropractic techniques specifically designed to facilitate easier, safer deliveries for mothers and infants. The most well-known prenatal technique is called the Webster Technique.
In a retrospective case study 17 cases met all inclusion criteria were reviewed which involved a group of pregnant women with low back pain. All women had chiropractic treatment which included spinal manipulation. They were all asked to rate their pain on the same Numerical Rating Scale. The groups average pain score at the initial visit was 5.9 (range 2-10) at the end of the care plan the average pain score was 1.5 (range 0-5). 16 out of 17 women showed a clinically important improvement. The average number of visits until the pain relief was resolved was 4.5 days (range 0-13). There were no reported negative effects in any of the 17 women in these cases. The conclusion of the study suggests that chiropractic treatment is safe for women during pregnancy and is effective in reducing low back pain intensity in pregnant women. Lisi, AJ. (2006). A study went retrospectively through 100 pregnancies involving 94 women that received prenatal care from a rural family GP practice in western New York. Spontaneous back pain was reported to the physician from 23 women during pregnancy. 11 of the 23 expecting women met the clinical criteria for sacroiliac subluxation which include absence of lumbar spine and hip pathology, sacral region pain, asymmetric movement of posterior superior iliac spines during flexion, pelvic compression test. The criteria include absence of lumbar spine and hip pathology, pain in the sacral region, asymmetrical movement of the posterior superior iliac spines upon forward flexion, a positive pelvic compression test and asymmetry of the anterior superior iliac spines. This group of 11 women who criteria were positive for sacroiliac subluxation were treated with rotational manipulation of the SI joints. After the specific manual adjustments to sacraliliac joints, 10 of the 11 women (91%) had pain relief and no tested negative for sacroiliac subluxation. Daly JM, et.al. 84% of women receiving spinal manipulative adjustments reported back pain relief during pregnancy. It also showed a significant drop in the likelihood of having back labour when spinal manipulative adjustments was administered during pregnancy.
