Fibromyalgia is a painful persistent condition marked by generalised pain and muscle stiffness. People who suffer from this illness experience pain and tension in different areas of the body and may also suffer from fatigue and difficulty sleeping. These symptoms can be felt in all different areas of the body.
Arthritis Australia considers the most common symptoms of fibromyalgia as:
- Pain, usually an aching, stiffness and tiredness of muscles, especially after rest of activity
- Noticeable fatigue that impacts your ability to enjoy your everyday activities
- Trouble sleeping and with your memory and concentration
- problems with concentration and memory
- irritable bowel (diarrhoea, stomach pain)
It is not yet known what causes fibromyalgia and for many people symptoms can start without notice and significantly impact their ability to enjoy everyday activities. Research suggests that fibromyalgia may be more common in people with inflammatory arthritis, an existing illness or infection, injury or trauma, or emotional stress and psychological illness.
Fibromyalgia Treatment Melbourne
If you have seen a medical doctor and they have diagnosed you with fibromyalgia, your doctor may have recommended a number of pain medications, lifestyle changes and physical therapies to give you relief from the associated painful musculo-skeletal symptoms you’re experiencing.
While physical therapies such as massage and chiropractic will never cure fibromyalgia or make it go away, in some cases they may provide relief from associated symptoms such as muscle tension and joint stiffness.
If your medical doctor advises physical therapy, therapies such as massage, myotherapy or chiropractic may be appropriate to manage the associated muscle tension and joint pain. Your local Wellbeing clinic offers several experienced therapists to choose from
Wellbeing Physical Alternative Therapies
Myotherapy: At Wellbeing, our team of Myotherapists are professionals in soft tissue treatments and offer a range of techniques such as muscle stretching, dry needling and cupping. Myotherapists undertake further study which allows them to develop skills in assessment, rehabilitation and other techniques such as ultrasound therapy that may alleviate pain and discomfort.
Massage: When you make an appointment for massage with Wellbeing, we have a number of caring and considerate therapists to suit your individual preferences. There are many massage providers, but if you have an existing health condition it’s important to know you are in the hands of someone who is fully trained, insured and licensed through the Australian Massage Association.

In Australia, chiropractors are registered through the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) and undergo extensive studies of the human body for a minimum of 5 years at university.
